Wilip-gin Birrarung murron – Keep the Yarra River alive!

Wurundjeri people of the Birrarung (Yarra River) for the first time spoke their Woiwurrung language in Victorian Legislative Assembly today. Thanks to technology and live podcasts I can tell my grandchildren I too witnessed this historical event!

This address by Wurundjeri elders Aunty Alice Kolasa, Uncle Colin Hunter Jnr, Uncle Ron Jones, Aunty Gail Smith, Uncle Allan Wandin and daughter Jacqui Wandin was to put forward a bill entitled Yarra River Protection (Wilip-gin Birrarung murron) Bill 2017 (Woiwurrung for “Keep the Birrarung alive”).

If this Bill passes, Birrarung  (Yarra River) is set to be first Australian River with rights as a living entity and its very own council advocating for it and ensuring its health is protected long into the future.
